Cole (Otis Coleman)

Cole

Cole is a successful black American painter and sculptor, who now lives in Melbourne. His gift is manifest through his art: when he paints a person or scene or object (properly, not just a quick sketch), he paints its true nature (or tries to; the actual result depends on how familiar Cole is with the subject). It takes him the usual amount of time and trouble to paint someone, but when he's finished, it will portray their true nature (for example, whether they are secretly malicious). Whether this will reveal corruption in nature or people (or supernatural beings), depends on the subtlety of the corruption and how familiar Cole is with the subject. He may have to paint several paintings of a particular landscape, for example, before they begin to show the evidence of corruption. Parts of the Umbra often also appear in his paintings.
Cole doesn't understand his gift and indeed cannot control it. It's impossible for him to paint a flattering portrait of an evil or corrupt person.
Cole is certainly no coward, but he will begin to run his mouth off and complain at the first sign of danger or stress. All the same, he's strong and quick and has defended the Sept admirably for the last three years. He is largely uneducated and can be quite superstitious at times.
Cole was born in Illinios and speaks the dialect common to most black Americans of the region. He's open and emphatic and vulgar, and will whoop and holler (or call people 'motherfuckers') without any restraint. He often jabs his finger in the air for emphasis.
Cole is about 6' tall, strong, and in excellent physical shape. He has short black hair and a tiny thin moustache over his upper lip.
After his First Change, Cole found he could communicate with the spirit of his grandfather, Clarence, by going into a trance [Past Life]. Unfortunately, although Cole believes that his grandfather was a wise and renowned Garou leader, in truth Clarence is never very helpful, since he always gives off-topic advice. For example, when Cole felt the pull to come to Australia, and knew that he might have to give up his painting for a regular job (since he was leaving behind the galleries and sponsors who'd supported his art), he asked Clarence for advice. "What you have to understand is", Clarence explained, "that it don't matter what a man do for his living, you see. What's important, is that that man is getting a lot of pussy. You understand what I'm telling you here son?". All of Clarence's advice begins with the phrase "What you have to understand is,". In life, Clarence died about eighteen years ago when Cole was young, after refusing Cole a biscuit at dinner one night (Cole asked for the biscuit, and he replied "Shut up boy, and eat some greens" and then collapsed on the table and died).
Cole lives in an expensive apartment near the university - with his sculptures. For some reason, shortly after Cole's First Change, four of his sculptures developed personalities and the power of movement. These sculptures now live in Cole's apartment and hide whenever anyone comes by.

Quiney:
Quiney is a miniature Crinos sculpture, about a foot high, connected with Cole's First Change and pilgrimage to Australia. He has never learned to speak, but seems fairly intelligent. He seems to need to eat from time to time. He seems to prefer rubber (the seals around Cole's windshield are a favourite of his), but once ate an art prize Cole won and occasionally eats his address book.

Harold:
Harold is a 3' high blocky humanoid sculpture. He is somewhat below average human intelligence, but can read slowly and has learned to use the Bpay system to pay Cole's bills or order things with Cole's credit card. He calls Cole 'master' and is very proud to help him.

Gena:
Gena is a 2' high gargoyle sort of sculpture. She is quite intelligent and can fly, but is rather unsociable.

Winston:
Winston is a chubby anthropomorphic mole about 2' high. He is fairly intelligent and likes to read, but tends to get distracted and sidetracked whenever he goes to do anything. Like Quiney, he needs to eat. He cooks excellent cakes and biscuits and things, and drinks tea several times a day. He speaks with an English accent and sounds quite educated.
