Claws of Wisdom Chronology

June 2000

Thursday 1

Abby and Corey keep studying. Freya spends the day with Jordan again, but tries to get a hold of Polly too - Questing Stone says alive but in an unknown location. Krieg continues his apology quest.

Tonight being the first night of the Ragabash moon, the pack head out to Reconciliation - there was some concern that the Killer of Children might escape while there is no light, so several senior Uktena have arrived to perform a stronger binding. A few packs, including Claws of Wisdom, are around to make sure nothing goes horribly wrong. There are a few scares, but the rituals seem to be successful.

Friday 2

Freya talks to Brad (Freya only). Most of the pack go out to Reconciliation and keep an eye out. There is some discussion about what to do long term - this amount of effort for one evil spirit is perhaps disproportionate, especially if it needs to be done every dark of the moon.

Saturday 3

Corey stays in town and goes out to a party, but at least some of the pack go out to Reconciliation for this last night of the Ragabash moon. The discussions about what to do with the Killer of Children seem to have progressed - the visiting Uktena shamans want to take the spirit and its binding with them to a 'safe place' where they can more easily lock it away, but the local Garou are objecting, feeling that they have a right to investigate the spirit.

Abby becomes aware of a spirit trying to get her attention. She steps into the Umbra and finds a wind spirit. It claims to have a message for her, but it wants to be fed first. Abby cautiously gives it some of her Gnosis and the spirit says "The horned god is dead. Come at once". Abby tries to work out what the hell that means, and mentally asks the rest of her pack. Bob pipes up with "Cernonous?" and the pack make erk noises. Questing Stone reveals that Cernonous is in Sydenee. They head back to Sleeping Lore, Corey a little narked about being pulled away from this cute redhead.

They find Graeme reading, about to turn in for the night, and explain their cryptic message. They ask if he can organise a moonbridge. Graeme looks a bit unimpressed (pointing out that Cernonous also wanted them to be surreptious), but the pack talk him around. Ends-the-Quiet is found and a moon bridge is opened. When the pack step out, it is into a cellar, bemusing some of them. Corey immediately recognises it as a pub. The pack are greeted by Josephine Brereton, a somewhat doughty 40-odd year old, who is apparently the Gatekeeper. She suggests they leave the back way, given the discretion that Graeme asked for. This they now do, grabbing Corey from the bar.

A couple of Questing Stones lead south west to University of Sydney. The pack creep through the grounds, following the sense of the ritual. They find themselves in front of a 4 storey building, with a sign out the front that says Department of Genetics. Also out the front is a man looking awfully like a security guard. He's just staring at the front of the door, not moving. Freya peeks in the Umbra and the building doesn't really appear, but there is something weird up near the top floor. Sensing for various traits doesn't really reveal much. Abby changes to lupus quietly in shadows and trots out to the guy near the door. As she is about to touch him, a voice next to the pack says "I wouldn't do that". Darius appears next to them, clad in a plush suit and a cloak of some weirdness. He sweeps forward and past the guard, and into the building. Claws of Wisdom follow, albeit a bit reluctantly.

Once inside the building, the smell of blood becomes apparent. Half way up the stairs is the dead body of another security guard, apparently having been killed by a blow with something sharp across the abdomen (not claws). Darius steps over the corpse and the others try to do the same. He leads them to the top floor, where an acrid smell clings. One door is standing open, and within is a large lab which has been trashed. Fluoro tubes swing from the ceiling, there is some sparks from live equipment, the floor is soaked with chemicals.. .and blood. Behind one of the benches is Cernonous, or at least his body, in Crinos form and obviously quite dead, probably from one or two massive claw blows. The pack question Darius about this and he says that he was meant to meet Cernonous for dinner, and when he didn't show Darius was concerned. He came here and found Cernonous like this, at which point he sent a message to the pack. He requires them to clean up the mess and minimise any evidence of their and Cernonous' activities in the last month or so - obviously things will come out, but he sees know benefit in revealing too much. As he is rank 5, they decide to obey the nice Silver Fang.

Darius says that he must go and inform Cernonous' sept and kin, and he will be back as soon as he can. Once he is gone and the pack have run out of swear words, they leap into action. Someone begins dedicating Cernonous' body in order to hide it, while they decide to leave the other guard where he is. A sniffing campaign around the site reveals a number of odd scents, although they are all hard to make out under the overpowering mask of all the spilt chemicals. Cernonous' scent is most prevalent. There is a bitter smell, like burning train brakes, which moves around the place randomly. Bob faintly, faintly can detect a sort of dusty smell, like desert sands - its associated with partial boot print and is vaguely on the computer. Corey leaps at the computer, only to find that its had its hard drives removed. He sighs and dedicates it to see what he can pull out of it in the Umbra. Cole looks for other lab notes, and finds great chunks of experimental note books missing from the last 6 months. The bone is nowhere to be found.

In the Umbra, Cernonous' lab appears to exist almost in entirety, which is a bit weird. The acrid train-brake smell exists here too, which suggests that it was either a spirit (could be, the smell is pretty simple) or its a Garou. It seems to wander randomly. One window is broken in the Umbra, outwards - maybe this is what Freya saw from downstairs. Corey begins to spirit awaken the computer in an effort to get something from it. Cernonous' body is carefully placed on a bench in the Umbra. Bob, Cole and Freya head off to Cernonous' house to see what they can see there. Abby begins spirit awakening a wall mirror - even though its smashed, she hopes to get some sort of image from it.

Cernonous lives about 30 minutes away by taxi, in a nice two storey house. However, it appears that they are not his first visitors for the evening. Someone has been into the study and also attacked the computer and a number of other items, like a filing cabinet and what seems to be a hidden bookshelf. Bob continues to use his gifts and finds that same dusty scent - much fainter than it should be, given that the room is enclosed. Its an outside dust, almost sandy, but not like a beach. It seems to come from the window, which, unlike all the other windows and doors, is not locked. Some faint boot-prints are outside the window, similar to the ones in the lab.

A search of the rest of the house reveals a number of weird items (duh, rank 4 theurge), but nothing particularly relevant or damning. They do find Abby's phone number and address scribbled on a pad next to the phone, so they take the whole thing. Much searching of the house, but still nothing relating to them or cloning the Bunyip. Other scents in the house - mostly Cernonous, faintly Darius, a number of other scents, some of which are probably Garou, but unknown to the pack.

Back at the lab, Corey has some success with the computer, getting it to give whatever it has left in memory to him. He doesn't pick up much, but it seems to suggest that the bone was a viable option (that being the last thing Cernonous was working on). Abby finishes awakening the mirror, although it not entirely successful because the spirit has been 'killed' by smashing the mirror. She manages to convince the spirit to show her the last things it 'saw'. The image is cracked and fractured and crazed, but she can see Cernonous working at his desk. Something appears next to, or behind him, a crinoid shape, teeth and claws, black, and it attacks him. Then the vision darkens.

The rest of the pack come back to the lab, and are met by Darius, who is accompanied by two others that he doesn't introduce. He asks where the body is, and then hands one of Claws of Wisdom a burial shroud sort of thing, telling them to wrap the body and bring it back. They do so, noting that as they finish wrapping the body that it morphs to homid form. Wacky. They bring the corpse back and hand it to the two silent attendees. Darius suggests that they get some rest and avoid any Garou in Sydney. Given their big day, the pack decide to crash in a motel for the night and head back to Melbourne somehow tomorrow.

Sunday 4

Freya and Bob are woken about 8.30am by the sounds of a storm lashing the motel they have crashed in. Freya can still see blue sky out her window despite the heavy wind and rain. Bob thinks its a bit odd and uses Sense Unnatural - heavy demonic, some wyld, some wyrm. In short, the same mix of unnatural senses that indicated the presence of the Bunyip in Fiddle Dee. Oh good. Freya sticks her head outside and sees that the storm is fairly limited in size - its lashing about a mile radius of the city, and their hotel is near the edge of the clouds. Cernonous' lab, on the other hand, may be right in the middle of it all. They wake the rest of the pack and explain the situation.

Moving in the realm, the 6 drenched Garou fight their way through the freaky storm. There is, fortunately, no sign of the Gauntlet being weakened or giant lizards coming from the Umbra. In fact, the Umbra has only weaver spirits, desperately fighting the storm that is also manifesting in the spirit realms. They are passing through a semi-industrial area and decide that maybe they should try the meditation thing as a way of contacting the spirits of the land. There is some rescuing pack members from the sweet, cool, gauntlet, but eventually the pack make it into some shelter in the Umbra. They sit down and try to get into the meditation thing.

However, an hour or so later, its pretty clear that its not going to work. Maybe its Corey, who isn't too hot on the idea. Maybe its the city surroundings - every other time things have worked its been in the bushland or at least in green areas. Or maybe its the noise from the storm... hey, where'd it go? In the Umbra, there is no sign of the storm other than some minor damage down to some structures and wetness everywhere. Peeking/stepping reveals that the realm is pretty much the same - everything is soaked and a bit chilly, but the sun is out.

The pack heads to Cernonous' lab, to find that the Forensic Police are more or less finished. A couple of guys are taking samples from around where the guard died. Voices seem to say that there are more people upstairs. After some hijinks, Krieg ends up upstairs in the lab in the Umbra, and spies on the plain clothes senior policeman and uniformed copper. Basically they are theorising that it might be some sort of industrial espionage, or possibly drugs related. They don't seem to have turned up much on Cernonous (or Professor Cerwyn Nostrum, as he is known by the mortal world), although there is wild speculation. There's nothing here to say that the storm was centred here.

Bob, Krieg and Freya go and check out Cernonous' house just to make sure that nothing is happening there. They find police have been and gone, and checking around, figure that its safer to not disturb the place again. Abby goes to the zoo, Corey goes surfing at Bondi. The pack decide there's nothing else they can do in Sydenee, and agree to get together in time to catch their train at 8pm.

At 4pm, Corey is happily floating out in the water with a couple of other surfers when he notices the sky above Bondi beach grow dark. The water does one of those sudden and surprising shifts, moving from happy bluish to a grey green colour. Clouds are building up maybe a km or so in from shore, and the weather seems to be turning nasty. Abby is just getting off the ferry and notices much the same thing. The rest of the pack is alerted and they join up and then head in to the centre of the storm. It seems perhaps to be a bigger storm now - although it had been a pleasant June afternoon, its now raining heavily, with strong winds and much grumbling thunder. The storm is also in the Umbra. In both realms, it is only a couple of miles across. The pack decide that they can get more done in the Umbra, despite the chances of being spotted by other Garou around the place. Sensing Unnatural reveals that the feeling has changed - demonic is still the strongest sensation, but wyrm sense is now stronger than wyld. As they move into the storm, they start to encounter a number of small banes, mindless things that seem to be either being swept into the storm, or to be heading into the centre. Feeling that this can't be a good thing, the pack pick up speed, and also squash the banes.

Suddenly, in a brief lull, the pack can hear the unmistakable sounds of a Garou frenzying. The wind picks up again and they try and follow to where the sound seemed to be coming from. They are, however, near the centre of the storm and it takes a few minutes. They round a corner and find...a bunyip, tearing away at the ground and the windows and the lamp and ... Its about 200 metres away and doesn't appear to have seen them. The pack creep closer, to within 50m. The bunyip appears to be frenzying alright - its not hitting any one type of thing, but is just hammering away at everything around it. The mindless banes seem to be attracted to it and are buzzing or shlepping around it, occasionally being splattered. Claws of Wisdom decide that using Freya's calming fetish is the way to go, and see if they can interact with the spirit that way.

Sneaky, sneaky, creep the six Garou. They get within a very short distance of the Bunyip and leap out. Bob and Krieg try to body slam it to the ground, but fail. Corey leaps out to help, but Krieg accidentally zots him with Falling Touch and he goes sprawling. However, in a short tick, the pack have pinned the still-Frenzying Crinos bunyip. Up this close they can see that the Bunyip has a number of sores and cuts which seem to be leaking pus, or similar fluids. Freya uses her pendant and the pitch of the Frenzy declines somewhat. Then the Bunyip suddenly disappears, dropping the Garou into a big pile. Bob peeks and sees the Bunyip (still in Crinos) running down the street. Working on the "he broke it first!" theory of the Veil, Bob leaps after it, followed by the other pack members.

Bob should have watched more kids tv, as he forgot to look left, look right and look left again; he appears in the middle of the road and gets a Honda up the clacker for his trouble. Bob has stepped out onto a road next to a park - fortunately the rain (sleet, hail) has driven most of the people inside and not in the street where they can see the magic doggies. Bob, fortunately too, is ok, and after he bites the tires, he takes off after the materialised Bunyip spirit. He is catching fast, but the Bunyip decides the throw one of the funny rocks at the side of the road at him. Bob screams to a halt as the Bunyip throws a small car his direction.

The rest of the pack appear, also in lupus, further traumatising the man who hit Bob and sprinting off through the storm. Except Kreig, who gets stuck in the Gauntlet. They start closing on the Bunyip, who seems to be faltering. Just as they get close enough to try and pull it into the Umbra again, it vanishes. Peeking reveals no Bunyip, but it does show that the Umbral storm suddenly relenting from its onslaught. The winds just stop, and the rain slackens, and then cease. The material storm is not being as wacky however, although it has eased a little. Folks realise that they've lost Krieg. Corey decides to step into the Umbra. Well, into the Gauntlet anyway. As the pack is trying to decide what to do to rescue Corey, another car comes around the corner and hits the horn while heading their way (bunch of dogs on the road, after all). Freya says "sod it" and vanishes from in front of the car, collecting Corey on the way. Everyone else decides to find somewhere a bit less obvious that the street with all the onlookers. Someone rescues Kreig, but they both appear out in the Realm on the same street. Fortunately, everyone's look the other way at the thrown car, so they creep into the park and go to the Umbra with the rest of the pack.

The pack return to the spot where they first saw the bunyip. Bob sniffs at the site and finds the same sort-of scent that was at Cernonous' lab. Abby realises that the Bunyip - a fairly dark Crinos - might have been what she saw in the mirror. All up, the evidence seems to suggest that it was the Bunyip spirit which killed Cernonous, possibly answering the question of "What will the Bunyip spirits do if you try this?".

Some discussion about how to track a spirit which reforms away, or whatever the Bunyip did to get away from them. Merlin is summoned, but he can't answer - he flies off to consult with other spirits. The Realm weather grumbles on for the rest of the afternoon and evening. Kreig figures that the next storm should happen 7.5hrs after this one, so probably about 11.30pm. The pack get some eats and work out somewhere to stay for the evening - so much for back to Melbourne. Merlin returns and suggests that the spirit is not so much fleeing when cornered (reforming, whatever, as being pulled or summoned elsewhere) - ie coerced by a third party. Some discussion about mages being able to summon and control spirits to cause chaos.

Monday 5

No storm is evident by midnight, and even the Realm weather clears somewhat, so people take turns keeping an eye out. Its not until 5am that the telltale lightning starts to the north of the harbour, and winds and clouds start to rush around. The weary pack head off through the Realm, across the Harbour bridge and approach the site through the Umbra. Again, the rain and winds have a delineated edge, but this time they are becoming much stronger. Small banes are being swept around by the gusting wind and driving rain, and the wyrm sense is rising up to the same levels as the demonic.

As they approach the centre, however, they spot some Crinos and homid and lupus forms, peeking over a wall at something that Claws of Wisdom can't see. After a brief mental consultation, they creep closer to these new Garou, hoping to sneak up. Sense wyrm reveals about the same level of wyrm as they'd expect from Garou, but before Kreig can use his Scent of the True Form gift, one of the lupus looks around and sees them, jumping somewhat and alerting her pack. There is a tense moment before one of the pack step forward and introduces himself as Pox, a rank 2 Bonegnawer philodox and packleader of the Streetsweepers, and who the hell are they? Abby does the full formal introduction thing and says that they are investigating the Bunyip spirit that has been at the centre of the storm. And indeed, down the direction Streetsweepers are looking, they can vaguely see the bunyip, still apparently frenzying. Pox seems to twig and says "oh, /that/ pack" but not in a bad way. He seems inclined to follow their lead, not having had much experience with the bunyip and non-city Umbra.

Observing the Bunyip reveals even more sores, and general signs of ill health. More banes cluster around the spirit as it frenzies back and forth - less energetically, and much more despairingly perhaps? They derive a plan - bind the spirit and keep it here so they can perform a cleansing ritual. Some of the Garou will swat banes, others will try and keep the bunyip in place, while Abby and one of the Streetsweepers try and bind it and Freya tries to cleanse the Wyrm taint. They spread out towards the spirit as non-threateningly as they can. Abby begins the ritual, but it suddenly seems to almost short out, clashing with another, stronger ritual. The energy raised by the rite is released all at once and knocks several of the Garou to the ground while the spirit shudders and disappears.

Everyone picks themselves up, and Pox suggests rather forcefully that they come to his Sept and explain what they know. Despite wanting to follow Darius' suggestion of not contacting other Garou, Abby feels they have little choice, so she agrees. They set off through the Umbral storm, which has not disappated this time. They return to the material world to cross the Harbour bridge, and it becomes clear that Pox is taking them to the caern that they moonbridged to on Saturday. They enter and find a small group of older Garou, including Mother Pasta, who is the Bonegnawer Jindabyne council member, and who knows them. They are welcomed to the Ear-to-the-Ground sept, and then asked to explain what they know. Abby carefully explains that they were here on private business, and when the storms started they investigated. They explain about the bunyip spirit and the similarity between other storms and what is happening now, and how the level of corruption is rising. Abby muses a bit on the sensations she received when her ritual went awry along with Gordon Bennet (the Streetsweeper who was helping her) and they conclude that it was a stronger ritual being performed, with more people. Abby is fairly, but not absolutely, sure that it was Garou magic. Mother Pasta questions them a bit, and then mentions that she understands Cernonous was killed on Saturday night. Abby basically says "Oh really? How interesting." and doesn't elaborate.

As they talk, the Umbral storm slowly breaks up and stops, although the Realm one continues to lash the city. Mother Pasta says they can go, but not to leave town (no, not really), and they head back to the motel to crash and burn for a while. However, fate has a different plan, and Abby opens the door to find that Darius is sitting on her bed. Abby resists the urge urge to frenzy and to try to throat Darius; they discuss things that have been happening and how Mother Pasta asked some pointed questions. Darius says that it is beginning to sound like perhaps Black Spiral Dancers are involved - wyrm rituals of the garou and spirits being used to hide scents and all. Claws of Wisdom point out that Darius and Cernonous both reassured them that they would not be put into a position where they would have to be dishonourable, but they are sort of being coerced into lying to Mother Pasta, which is not good. Darius is fairly understanding and suggests that things will come out anyway and they need only be sneaky for a short time. He offers help and Abby asks if he could find a way to track the spirit.

Kreig tries to get home, but finds the airports are clogged. By the time he figures out its not happening, the train is full too. He rings Greg and explains the situation - Greg doesn't go spastic, even though this is about the 3rd time Kreig's had to cancel lessons at the last moment indefinitely in as many months.

The rest of the pack hang about and try to make sense of the world. Corey and Abby go out for an early morning drink and breakfast. The tv in the bar is on the news and its full of reports on the storm damage. Corey moves to King's Cross to fulfil his urges. The rest of the pack start to think maybe this mental link thing was a poor idea. Freya rings her family and fills them in on where she is and all. Looking at the Umbra around the place reveals very active weaver presence, repairing the damaged structures.

About 5pm, Kreig has returned to the motel, and his phone rings. A female voice at the other end asks for Abby. Krieg mentally says that there's someone on the phone for her - after a lot of confusion about who this person is, and whether Abby is there, or whether she's somewhere shadowy, the person eventually communicates that there's something that she's been told Abby will be interested in near Chiswick. The fem on the other end of the phone hangs up. Much head-scratching, but the pack head out there anyway. About 1/2 way there, it becomes clear that they are heading into a storm.

In the Realm, the storm is fierce enough, but in the Umbra, its unbelievable - visibility is about 3 metres, smell is useless, and its even an effort to stay standing in lupus and homid. Sensing Unnatural reveals demonic, stronger wyrm and some wyld (ie: more wyrm still, right on the edge of corruption). Weaver spiders are being hurled around by the storm, as are many smallish banes of various types ("waaarg-" "Woo-" "yeee-" as spirits fly past). The pack try to head to the centre of the storm, and as they head towards it, a figure steps out of an umbral building and waves to get their attention before ducking back into shelter. Claws of Wisdom follow into the dark, senses already. The four people inside the shelter are all Garou, and one of them introduces herself as Eustace Blunt (Ho,Ra,BG,2) packleader of Misery Loves Company. Abby quickly introduces her pack and there is a lot of rather crowded greetings. Eustace says that she was given Krieg's phone number by Mother Pasta, and told to ring them if they found a storm. Claws of Wisdom ask about Bunyip, but Eustace says she hasn't found anything. Both packs head out, trying to work towards the centre of the storm.

It takes a fair amount of time, but eventually they find the Bunyip spirit, storming around the streets. Its looks positively diseased, large patches of weeping flesh discolouring its fur, broken claws, pus running from its eyes. Its still frenzying though, tearing at the land around it. The packs try and discuss what to do while swiping at the banes swarming about. Some people are in favour of cleansing, others in favour of leaving it alone. To and froing for a while, trying to think of a way they can communicate with the Bunyip - however, there's no consciousness or awareness in its eyes, just madness. They try and extend the intrapack mental thing out to the spirit, but no avail. Much head-scratching. Cole suddenly remembers that he has the Mindspeak gift, and after his pack reassure him that its a good idea and then desperately try and remove themselves from the pack link, Cole uses the Gift to connect to the Bunyip.

Claws of Wisdom watch Cole freefall backwards, slamming his head onto the concrete, and start bleeding from the nose. The spirit disappears, jerked away in a flash. The storm changes pitch a fraction, making it a bit easier to hear. Cole is healed and removed to somewhere safe, and then brought around. He is not happy. He did receive some communication with the bunyip spirit, mostly impressions - underground; damp; dark; sitting on coloured tiles in a pattern; dark figures around him, at least 8, maybe 12; chanting. He tries to replicate the chanting, but the impression that he received was of the music of the language, the rhythms and sounds, rather than actual words. Abby bends her ear to it, and suggests that it sounds related to Gaelic perhaps? Eustace looking around for any evidence of why the Bunyip was here in particular, and then heading back to the caern for some food and all.

Nothing turns up in a look about the place, other than the considerable collateral damage - emergency vehicles are already on the scene dealing with car crashes and more, as the storm intensified just on peak hour. The Umbral storm is slowly winding down, but the Realm one continues at a slower pitch. They return to the Ear-to-the-Ground Sept, finding a fairly large number of Garou there. The two packs grab some food after brain dumping what they know at Herman Cartright and Mother Pasta. Cole finds somewhere quiet and safe and goes into the light trance he uses to contact his grandfather Clarence. Immersed in the vision-scene he usually uses to communicate, he asks Clarence if he has ever heard anything like this, and tries to replicate the chanting and sounds he heard from the Bunyip. Clarence grabs little Cole by the ear and drags him to the sink, washing his mouth out with soap, but in between this rather impolite behaviour, Cole manages to gather that Clarence thinks its the language of the Black Spiral Dancers. Goodo. He returns to the hereandnow and informs his rather unthrilled pack.

Mid-meal, several of the pack shiver and feel a bit odd and light-headed. Other Garou in the bar look around a bit puzzledly too. Wind suddenly slams a couple of doors open, and the drumming rain becomes even louder. Lightning causes the lights to flicker. Freya looks into the Umbra and can see a large, shiny black something, blocking the windows of the Umbral pub. Feeling that this was probably not normal, the pack split up, some heading outside in the Realm to peek, others finding somewhere private to step. Kreig is one of the peekees and he goes outside to find that the shiny thing is one of a pair of 10' high Docs, which lead up into fishnet stockinged legs, which lead even further up into a leather miniskirt and shredded top. Basically above the caern is a 100' tall punk girl, replete with pink and black spiked mohawk. Needless to say that everyone is surprised. One of the local garou in the Umbra is asked what the hell and they say that its the caern totem, but they've never manifested like this before (not Manifested, just manifested).

There is a fair bit of confusion about the place, not helped by the presence of mortals around as well ("What are you all looking up at?" "er,... the storm... yeah."). Mother Pasta is kind of pissed about the whole situation, and is randomly blaming passersby, which unfortunately includes the rapidly unimpressed Abby and Claws of Wisdom. The Sept elders start to perform rituals to communicate with the totem. While no one is paying any attention, Cole sneaks around the back of the caern, and starts climbing the fishnets of the totem. Despite several scares, he makes it all the way up to her shoulders, sticking into the clouds. The totem's head is tipped back, and she seems to be intently staring into the clouds. Cole uses the Sense Unnatural gift and is nearly knocked off his precarious perch by the sensation of energy flowing - its analogous to a tv show he saw about Hawaii and lava flowing past underneath rock - the energy is going up and into the storm.

Pox comes out and speaks to Abby, passing on information from inside - the totem is not responding, and they are therefore unable to access the powers of the caern. Cole passes on his information, and Abby wants to know where the hell he is. Cole asks if they could get a cherrypicker, because he's a bit worried about climbing down. Before haranguing Cole, Abby passes on the information to Pox, who heads back inside. More rain, lightning, hail, etc. Pox comes back out and says that Herman says that the caern is being drained of gnosis - it has only a couple of days before it is destroyed. A voice says "That is why I believe we may be dealing with a Hive of Dancers" and Darius appears, removing his cloak. Pox looks a bit askance at him and says that he's never seen any evidence of Dancers until recently. Before they can review the evidence, Mother Pasta comes running out of the pub and starts screaming at Darius about destroying her caern deliberately in his mad quest to return the bunyip. Abby grabs Freya's calming fetish and heads that way, just in case. Mother Pasta is mostly screaming in Italian, which is a shame, because Abby understands most of it, and is less than impressed by Mother Pasta'a inference that Darius has used their innocence and used them as his tools to destroy her caern. Abby is grinding teeth together and looking a bit like she needs a good fetishing herself. Mother Pasta storms off again, and Darius rather mildly says that he should return to Jindabyne, as there will now be a special council meeting, and everything will come out there.

There follows a discussion amongst the pack where Abby expresses some frustration at being blamed for everything when they are trying to help. Some off the cuff quips by the pack don't help her mood and she storms off to get drunk. A bit surprised by this, the rest of the pack try and think of something they can do. They speak to the other Garou at the sept and meet the third pack at Ear-to-the-Ground, So Much for Subtlety (packleader is an ahroun called Andrew). While one of the packs remains at the caern, the rest spread out in pairs or more and try to find signs of a Hive, on the belief that it may be more noticeable at the moment if they are engaging in this sort of ritual warfare. Cole heads back to the motel, possibly to wait for Abby, but also to work on his fake finger-bone. The rest of Claws of Wisdom split up and use their gifts to see what they can see. They find numerous concentrations of wyrm, especially pollution-oriented banes and such; much of which is being swept away by the storms. There are police and emergency services everywhere and on several occasions Garou are stopped and it is recommended that they return home.

Meantime, Abby has managed to convince the bartender that she's over 18. After few hours, she can't convince him that she's sober however, so she stumbles out to try and find another bar. On the way her phone rings and Cossack says that she should get back to the motel. She starts to complain but he is strangely insistent. The conversation consists mostly of "What? Go to the motel" until Abby agrees and starts heading back that way. Then she remembers she doesn't have a phone and sort of stops. A police car pulls up and asks her if she's ok, and she manages to pretend being sober and they offer to take her home. They drop her back at the motel. Going into her room, Abby sees that there are a bunch of sticks on the bed. She picks them up and handles them, and realises that they are spiritually active. Abby tries to attune to them but can't. She mentally contacts Cole and finds he's next door. Cole comes in and manages to attune to the talens - they are possessed by spirits of Finding, and seem to be attuned to ... the Bunyip?

After examining the talens (short segments of wood, apparently having been worked in some fashion, perhaps by a gift?), the pack eventually decide to get Streetsweepers to come along and help them out. Pox and all are not too far away, and appear within the 1/2 hour. The eventual plan is to use them one at a time. There is some concern that the talens will help whoever left them to find the pack, but its pointed out that they already know that - they left them here, after all.

They get into the van and one of Claws of Wisdom activates the first one. It immediately conveys a direction, and for a time people drive along through the storm and debris following the directions being given out. However, after maybe 10 minutes the whole stave suddenly turns grey and crumbles to dust in seconds. The second talen is activated (possibly by Cole) and it lasts longer, maybe 20 minutes or so, but in the end it too disintegrates. The two packs have been led north-north-east and the Streetsweepers flash their lights and get Claws of Wisdom to pull over. Pox runs up to the window, trying to keep rain out of his eyes. They have a brief discussion about why the talens are pulling them towards the Ear-to-the-Ground caern, and agree to pull over if the next talen keeps heading them towards the Rocks.

However, the next talen diverges somewhat, and the pulling leads them toward King's Cross instead of the Rocks, so they keep homing in. They are down to the last talen and driving through an almost abandoned bit of the city when it suddenly flicks around in the hands of one of the Garou and points at a typical tenement house in a block of 12 or so. The two cars drive on and park around the corner and some sneaking about in the next confirms the location before the last talen also disintegrates. Looking about the area, the pack discover that most of the houses are abandoned, and some have obviously partly burnt down. The terraces all surround an abandoned park, which is partially occupied, judging by the fires they can see faintly glimmering through the rain and wind. There is no particularly surprising amounts of Wyrm or anything else supernatural apart from the storm. Some discussion about confirming what the hell this indicates is had, and they decide to get word back before trying anything. One of the Streetsweepers (Petey) heads off on foot. Eventually the plan is hit on to have two of the Garou move along from house as if they were looking for somewhere to stay, while the others prepare to act if necessary.

Bob and Lys (from Streetsweepers) are eventually chosen, cos they look the most street-kidish. They try every house along the strip before hitting the house in question. Lys is the one who hits the doorknob, giving it a rattle, and she bolts straight away into the park. Bob follows at great speed. The Garou eventually meet up and Bob and Lys babble a bit about darkness and blackness and the world melting. This is taken to be enough confirmation that something is wrong - presumably its the Hive. Leaving Gordon Bennet, Lys and Krieg and Bob behind to keep an eye on the place, the rest of the two packs head back to the Ear-to-the-Ground Sept (picking Petey up on the way) and give the good news out. Sitting about the place are a bunch of Garou that they don't know, who the others seem to regard with a bit of suspicion - maybe its the way that these newcomers are tending to their firearms.

Streetsweepers make a report to the Sept Elders, and then get Abby to do the same. The Elders say that they need to discuss things, so both packs head back out to the main part of the bar. The strange Garou that were out there before come and ask questions of the locals and it turns out that they claim to be a free pack called We Also Walk Dogs, not affiliated with any Sept or anything. They also seem to be some sort of attack group, claiming that they knew the Sept would need them. Corey seems intrigued. Cole heads off to steal some silverware from a department store. Abby is a bit concerned about the amount of time the Elders might take to get around to making a decision. The Hand of Lore turn up from Sleeping Green, and Marion bounces up to the pack. Apparently Peter asked her to marry him, so she's all enthused - although she had to say 'no' - explaining about the garou stuff would be a pain. She asks about Krieg, and when they explain where he is, Marion says she'll tell him later.

Meanwhile back at the terraces, Gordon and Lys have taken up hiding places out the front in the long grass while Krieg and Bob are exploring the warren of alleys at the rear. They eventually find somewhere to observe surreptiously. About an hour later (mostly filled with "sheesh, what the hell are they talking about so long?"), they are disturbed from their sheltered place of rest by the appearance of an older gentleman who appears to have a fireaxe. Much jumping about and dodging the axe while Krieg tears the guy's head off after confirming that he is a fomor. There are more gentlemen approaching in an ambulatory fashion, some of whom are armed. From the front of the house comes a howl of a strategic withdrawal nature, so Krieg and Bob opt for the better part of valour and leg it while yelling about wyrm taint bubbling up everywhere. They meet up with Gordon and Lys, who say that everyone that was in the park suddenly went all weird and headed for the house, and the Umbra has gone very yuck.

Abby and Freya pass this on at the Rocks, interrupting the Elders in their deliberation. They come out and address the Sept - they're going to have to take a few hours to prepare for the attack, and hope that they can stop whatever is going on that is draining their caern. One of the free pack suggest that they could just blow the spirit of the Bunyip away, and that might fix the issue, but its frowned on except as a last resort. In the meantime, some guy from America will be coming and using a cool gift to start a riot to cover the attack. Herman enters into some sort of negotiations with Paul of We Also Walk Dogs, who seems to want a fetish in return for their help. At some point an older Jamaican guy is introduced to the pack as Sam Henry, a Rank 5 Bonegnawer. The pack gets to chat to him for a bit, and Sam asks Cole if he used to live in Chicago. When Cole says yes, Sam says that he's that guy the Fianna from there were after, the one that stole their fetish and ran for it. Cole looks blankly at Sam, and denies everything.

Back at the Hive, there's been no evidence of people or anything moving out of the area - the four garou are watching from a bit of a distance though, so its possible that thing could slip past in the rather enthusiastic weather. Bob repeatedly asks what is taking so long. Eventually things seem to be ready. Sam concentrates for a while and faintly the sound of smashing glass and screeching brakes reach the Garou. The sounds get louder, even over the storm, and the Garou roll out and head for King's Cross.

Claws of Wisdom have been assigned the task of guarding the rear of the Hive (not least because they have a rough idea of what it looks like, via Bob and Krieg) - the Streetsweepers will enter from that direction and then the Claws of Wisdom will stop anyone from getting in or out. They make some plans for what to do when they get there, involving blocking alleys with cars and splitting up into an Umbral force (Freya, Bob and Kreig) and a Realm force (Cole, Corey and Abby). Picking up their point-men pack members on the way, the Garou arrive nearby and wait for the signal - a howl which rings out even over the storm. The packs drive in the cars they've stolen and set them up to block at least one of the alleys and make the other two difficult to navigate and provide some cover. The Streetsweepers run up to the back door and move inside - the sounds of gunfire and combat are already ringing out from within.

Once in the Umbra, Freya, Bob and Krieg try and make some cover by tearing up fences. Any weaver spiders they encounter are usually too busy trying to repair storm damage, so they manage to avoid getting calcified. However, they are part way through prying up bluestone cobbles to use as projectiles when banes pour out of the nearby buildings and leap to the attack. Four of the little flying monstrosities launch themselves into the fray, only to be beaten back by the Garou, although not without some collateral damage.

Things are heating up in the Hive from the sounds of battle. In the Realm, Cole hears the sound of approaching runners, and words up his pack-mates. Three fomor run around the corner of an alley. Two of them skid to a halt and raise shotguns while the third leaps to attack. Corey is stabbed by a knife, but it gets caught in the flak-jacket and spins into the darkness. Abby attempts to nail them with her crossbow, but is still unfamiliar with it, and isn't having much luck. The two guys with shotguns open fire - Abby is hit, but barely notices. Cole is trying to reload his sawn-off with normal ammunition, because he feels that none of the homids are really Garou. Abby crunches Corey's assailant and then takes another shotgun blast in the side from 20' away. These flak jackets rock. Well, not for Corey who finds that his is a defective cheap knockoff, falling down with a big hole in his abdomen. Abby leaps forward and rips the shotgun off one of the fomor, flipping it around and shooting him. She throws the gun to Cole who blows away the other fomor. Now the proud owners of several shotguns, the two garou use their healing talen on Corey, bringing him back to life and waiting for his natural healing to kick in. He throws away the now useless flak jacket.

Krieg, in the Umbra, spots some movement in the top storey of the Hive. He lobs a cobblestone through the window and is rewarded with a muffled "ow". A short time later, the back door in the Umbra is torn off and several scrags pour out the gap. Lacking any projectile weapons in the Umbra, the Garou are forced to wait until the pointypointy banes reach their barriers. Krieg and Freya take the front line, while Bob hangs back a little. Krieg dispatches one of the scrags as another emerges from the house and leaps on top of him. Obviously feeling that Kreig is the dangerous opponent here, they both attack him, stabbing repeatedly into his torso and tearing at vital organs. Bob feels Krieg start to fade and thinking fast, rips Krieg away from the combat and channels as much energy as he can into Mother's Touch while Freya leaps forward. Freya is hard pressed, but eventually manages to dispatch the two spirits with help from Bob.

Having communicated this situation to the rest of the pack, Cole heads to the Umbra with their healing talen. Krieg and Freya are mended up as best as they can for the moment, and then Cole heads back, although he chooses to appear in the Realm a distance away from the others. Abby and Cole have a mental argument over Cole being with them rather than off to one side and in different cover when Corey notices some movement on top of the Hive. He flicks his switch and lights the whole thing place up with the floodlight he managed to find before the attack. Two large, crinoid figures are caught in the halogen beam. Cole leaps up onto the roof in a single bound, and lets loose with his silver-loaded sawn-off. Corey tries to head up there as well, fearing that he might miss out on some glory or something, but has trouble getting a leg up. Abby leaps on top of the nearest car to try and get enough angle over the Hive to see what is happening.

One of the figures has run for it, while the other writhes in agony on the ground. Cole empties the shotgun into that figure as he runs past, hoping to be able to get a clear shot on the second figure. He manages one wounding shot, but the figure drops off the side of the terrace houses before he can close. As he reaches the end, he can see the crinos clawing at the ground, which has become almost liquid, and sinking into the dirt. He fires once more, but isn't sure if he hit.

Corey has managed to get up to the roof when Cole starts to head back. Abby hears a growling and sees lights coming towards her along the alley. She jumps down off the car and warns the others, taking cover behind a fence. The car shows no sign of slowing down as it approaches the two perpendicular vehicles the pack has placed in the alley, and Abby lets loose with her shotgun, clipping someone in the back of what seems to be a ute. The ute crashes heavily into the two obstructive cars and grinds to a halt, throwing the people in the back around a little. It is at this point that Corey, who has thrown himself down on the roof, lets loose with his assault rifle on full auto. When the noise stops, there's not much movement from the ruined ute. The three Garou drop down and finish off the fomori and take cover again as the noises of combat spread through the terrace houses and also underground. One blast of a shotgun down a stormwater drain hits someone judging by the sounds.

Meanwhile in the Umbra, one of the nailed-over windows disintegrates in a shower of splinters and a huge, warty, horned figure leaps out, slamming into the ground. The Garou prepare to attack, but the figure stretches out to its full height and roars, and they realise that this god will kill them, its inevitable, they are far too pitiful to attack such a being... as the garou cringe away from the eminent being in their midst, it sprints past and into the alley. Bob notices as it goes past that it has a fingerbone hanging from one hand by a cord... a very familiar fingerbone. Krieg is the first to throw off the strange feeling, and he races after the warty crinos. He manages to keep the figure in sight even through the storm for a few minutes, in which time Freya catches up with him. However, they loose sight of the figure, and smell is all but useless in this weather. When Bob catches up, he uses his gifts to enhance smell to the point where they can find that the warty crinos disappeared. Freya peeks successfully, and sees that the streets are dark, and full of rioting humans, buildings on fire and general mayhem happening. There's no sign of a giant scaled thing.

Pinging with Sense Wyrm gives them a rough idea that the fellow might have changed to homid and mixed with the rioters. Krieg decides to hell with subtlety and after they step sideways into an abandoned shop, bursts out of the window in crinos form, with Freya in lupus along with him. Humans scatter left right and centre, except for the few that go him with a baseball bat. He chases towards the strongest wyrm sense and one of the people in that general direction stops running and grows in size, developing horns and horrid skin on the way. Freya seems stuck in lupus form, so she bites away at the things ankles, while Krieg and it start fighting in the middle of the street. The Dancer has a knife which seems to bite Krieg deeply ever time he strikes with it, sending shivers of cold and dark through Krieg. With one final strike, Krieg is sent to the ground with a huge gash in the stomach. Freya flips to Crinos and frenzies as Bob skids around the corner with an "oh shit" and a mental "can you come?" to the rest of the pack. As a couple of other Garou have come out the back door and waved to the remnants of Claws of Wisdom, they feel that they are free to come running.

Freya vents her anger at the thing which has killed her packmate, and grabs the hand with the knife, and then bites clean through the forearm of the Dancer. He staggers back, blood arching through the air, and then falls between Freya's flying claws. Bob is left watching her stomp the Dancer into paste, and opts to rescue Krieg out from the area. Fortunately the bone was attached to a cord around the same wrist and isn't being pasted, so Bob retrieves that too. As he sits and waits for Freya to calm down, or at least be unable to divide the pieces any further, he is approached by a bunch of people who he recognises as the Ngalyod pack. They ask what's going on and with their help and the arrival of Abby, Corey and Cole, Freya is eventually brought back to herself and the pack return to the Rocks caern. On the way, Cole manages to convince Corey to take credit for killing the Dancer that he killed - Cole feels he doesn't want the attention.

The mood is jubilant, if tempered by sadness. Pox is dead, as is one of We Also Walk Dogs. Closer to home, Marion Perry of the Hand of Lore has also been killed. However, the Garou have rooted out 15 Dancers, not counting the small few that escaped their attack, as well as innumerable fomor and banes. Shortly after the final defenders were killed, the Totem demanifested, and the Sept Elders say that she was sending out her strength into the storms to help hold off the corruption surrounding the Bunyip. The general feeling is that the Dancers were using the bone to corrupt the spirit, as it was seen in the deepest part of the Hive - an underground chamber where colourful tiles depicted Brolga, a bird spirit known to be not particularly pleasant in aboriginal mythology, and also the hive totem. That spirit will be destroyed after being cleansed.

The bone itself has a strong Wyrm presence, but with the help of some of the other Garou at the Sept, this is cleansed and lifted. The human riots are fading with the dawn and with the storms. The early morning news consists mostly of "what the hell was that?". The Garou are planning to minimise the damage to the Veil as best the can, but the favoured approach seems to be to suggest that the extreme electrical activity caused some sort of seizure-like effect.

Another storm starts in the north west of Sydney about lunchtime. Feeling that they really don't need this shit, the Claws of Wisdom head out there with Misery Loves Company. They find that the storm is much gentler, more rain and some wind and no thunder, as well as having much lesser Wyrm sense. At the centre is the Bunyip spirit, but this time in lupus. Attempts are made to communicate with the spirit, but although it seems to be just running around rather than striking out at things, it still has that mad look in its eyes. The downpour ceases as suddenly as it begins. Another such downpour occurs later in the day, further out of the city. Speaking to the Ear-to-the-Ground Garou, its unclear as to whether the Bunyip is leaving or what, but the feeling is that the Claws of Wisdom can please take the bone out of their city now. This, combined with the somewhat uncomfortable silences that happen while they are around (not to mention straight out hostility from Mother Pasta), mean that the pack decide to leave with Christine and the surviving members of Hand of Lore when they take Marion's body back to the Sept.

It is a muted party of Garou that arrive in the Sleeping Lore caern. They convey a brief outline of everything that happened to Cossack and the other Garou, leaving a full description to the next Moot. Marion's body is laid out and Cossack says that funeral rites will be performed on Thursday night. The pack go their own separate ways. Cole finds that Harold has left a number of rather strange messages on the answering machine that mostly seem to have to do with getting caught in Yass when the sun came up. Krieg tries to work out if he should tell Peter about Marion, or just pretend that he didn't know she was there.

Thursday 8

The entire Sept gathers for Marion's funeral. In the Umbra, she is laid on a pyre while the Sept gathers about her. Various sept members tell stories about her life, until Christine tells how she died.

At the hive, the Hand of Lore had been cleaning out the top floor, with Marion taking the brunt of the fighting. A group of banes and Dancers had made a push for the roof when a bane caused Alexander Urosevic to frenzy. He threw himself into the enemy, and Marion leapt after him. Alex went down, but Marion managed to hold the enemy back long enough for the others to arrive before she was killed. The banes and Dancers were destroyed, apart from two Dancers that made it onto the roof, one of whom 'Corey' killed.
Cossack takes a touch and lights the pyre, saying "Marion Perry, Sings-of-the-Street, go with Gaia". He starts to howl, which is taken up by the rest of the Sept. After the funeral, a wake is held in Marion's memory. Alex keeps himself apart from everyone else. Christine and Georgina attempt to speak to him a few times, but he moves away.

Friday 9

The Jindabyne Council meets, and all those who were involved in the recent events in Sydney are in attendance. Each of the Claws of Wisdom are interviewed separately - they are brought before the Council to relate what happens and then to answer questions.

Abby

Wungala Rose (Blackfuries)
Why do you think Cernonous did not tell the council about his research?
Abby
It is a rather delicate subject and I think that Cernonous did not tell the council about his research because he was concerned of any possible interference from other garou. Given how strongly Cernonous felt that this was the path that he needed to follow, it is not uprising that he felt it best not to reveal the efforts of his research until he had a positive result to report.
Wungala
Did he give any other reason to you?
Abby
Not at first. We later thought that he thought that perhaps one of my pack members may have been suitable to act as a surrogate mother, which I had some reservations about.
Wungala Rose
Did he say why he had chosen your pack to make the steps towards returning the bunyip?
Abby
Because we had previously had favourable contact with the bunyip, in the sense that we appear to have had contact with the bunyip that that did not involve us getting squashed or going insane.
Don Mephisto of the Glasswalkers
Given the evidence at the site, do you feel that the Dancers spoiled Cernonous' ritual?
Abby
Yes, I feel that the Dancers interrupted his ritual to such an extent that any progress that might have been made was not only interrupted but also destroyed. [This causes a bit of a stir]
Don Mephisto
You feel then that we have taken a step backwards rather than a step forwards? Could you explain why?
Abby
Perhaps. Not only was the bone taken, but also all of the lab notes and computer files. These items were not recovered from the Dancer hive, only the bone. I find this disturbing, because it may mean that there are others out there with that knowledge (if it was not destroyed). I have concerns about what the knowledge could be used for.
And I'm not sure that the Bunyip will be able to distinguish between 'those garou (ie Dancers)' controlling one of the their own, and 'those garou' ie us, trying to free it. Having said this, the freed bunyip spirit appeared to return to the wild, rather than seeking vengeance. [Various Council members look thoughtful]
Carla Grimmson of the Get of Fenris
Do you have a personal opinion on whether the Bunyip are, lets say, coherent enough to be able to understand your efforts to return them?
Abby
From our previous contact with the bunyip, I feel that it is possible to have coherent contact with the bunyip. I think it perhaps possible that the bunyip may even be able to understand that we made efforts to return them, however I think the methods involved (genetics etc) would be beyond their comprehension.
Carla
Do you think this matters? Does any process used necessarily need to be comprehensible by the Bunyip themselves?
Abby
Possibly. My contact with the Bunyip leads me to believe that they have trouble comprehending the modern world at all, which is not surprising considering they have not lived through to see the changes that have occurred. I think their current lack of comprehension of the modern world is a issue in general. I don't know if this would impede the processes needed to attempt to bring them back.
Vlad of the Shadowlords
Why did you not kill the bunyip spirit when it became clear that the corruption was due to its presence?
Abby
Because the corruption was not due to the presence of the bunyip spirit. The corruption was due to the presence of the large Black Spiral Dancer Hive in the region which we did help to kill and destroy.
Vlad
Nonetheless, the caern itself was not being corrupted, but was lending its strength to the bunyip - if that spirit had been destroyed, surely the caern and totem would have been rescued from their poor choice? [Mother Pasta looks a bit pissed, Innana lays a hand on her arm and Monash says something in her ear]
Abby
I disagree. I don't necessary think that killing the bunyip spirit would have stopped the caern and its totem from doing what it did.
I'm not sure that killing the spirit would have been possible, given the control the Dancers had over it. What's to say the Dancers wouldn't have just stopped us from killing it? or just summoned another one?
Furthermore I think that to kill the bunyip spirit would have meant that we would NOT have located and destroyed the Black Spiral Dancer Hive in the vicinity. And I think that allowing this hive to remain operational would have ultimately done far more damage than that already done.
Vlad
Do you feel that Cernonous' methods were ill-advised?
Abby
I feel that perhaps Cernonous did not fully consider the risks involved with his methods.
Darius of the Silverfangs
Where do you suspect that the talen-sticks come from?
Abby
[Abby blinks] I have no idea. I am convinced that the person I spoke to on my 'non-existent' mobile phone was Cossack. Given that the sticks lead us to where the Black Spiral Dance Hive was, I can only assume that it came from a 'good' source. Perhaps the spirits of the bunyip themselves took a hand, given it was one of their own that was being cruelly manipulated. [Darius, Monash and Tjinderi look interested, but don't say anything]
Monash End-to-the-Darkness of the Stargazers
You encountered a number of bunyip spirits in your time looking for the remains of a single bunyip. Did you gain any sense of what they may have felt regarding your quest?
Abby
The only bunyip spirit we actually spoke to in regards to our quest was the Caern totem from the Caern we saved from the Nexus Crawler. She did not seam to care one way or the other (I think she was still too deep in mourning and sorrow), but she nonetheless gave us the bone we said we needed in order to attempt this.

Bob

Bob pre-resolves to be as honest as possible.

Wungala Rose (Blackfuries)
Why do you think Cernonous did not tell the council about his research?
Bob
I think because he wasn't sure that he would have the support of all the members and he wasn't sure that it would work anyway so I think he decided not to tell anyone unnecessarily and cause conflict in case it didn't end up working. This is only my theory though as he didn't inform us as to why he didn't tell you about it before hand.
Wungala Rose
Did he say why he had chosen your pack to make the steps towards returning the bunyip?
Bob
Because we had had a few encounters with the Bunyip in the past.
Don Mephisto of the Glasswalkers
Given the evidence at the site, do you feel that the Dancers spoiled Cernonous' ritual?
Bob
Yes.
Carla Grimmson of the Get of Fenris
Do you have a personal opinion on whether the Bunyip are, lets say, coherent enough to be able to understand your efforts to return them?
Bob
I'm not sure, every time I've encountered them, they seem to be very set on mourning and blaming us. The spirit I spoke to in Sth Australia appeared not to care as long as we left her to mourn. So as I said, I'm not sure, but possibly not as none of our efforts to explain what we were trying to do and why seemed to make a difference either way.
Carla continues
A couple of the spirits though, have showed enough strength of will to attempt to contact you and not give into their rage? [Darius, Vlad and Monash give Carla an odd look as she asks the question]
Bob
(its a question? ;)) That's true and it seemed to be part of a dominance game perhaps because when Abby was submissive to it, it showed her visions and didn't try to kill her even though it easily could have.
Vlad of the Shadowlords
Why did you not kill the bunyip spirit when it became clear that the corruption was due to its presence?
Bob
Because we thought (rightly) that it was being controlled by another party and killing it would not help us find who ever was doing it and stop them. Killing it would also just have continued the slaughter of the past and thats not what we set out to achieve.
Vlad
Granted that it would not have showed good faith, it would, however, have probably caused the caern totem to cease its attempts to drain the caern? [Mother Pasta gives Vlad a dirty look]
Bob
That may have been one outcome, however if we had of, we wouldn't have found the Black Spirals and besides one of the main problems when we were tracking it was that it kept disappearing.
Vlad
Do you feel that Cernonous' methods were ill-advised?
Bob
Possibly, but I don't know exactly what his methods were. It was also unlikely that it would have worked, the bone he was trying to use was extremely old and bleached by the sun.
Darius of the Silverfangs
Where do you suspect that the talen-sticks come from?
Bob
Originally we thought they were from our Sept Elders, however that seems not to be the case. I'm not really sure and we haven't had a chance to investigate it.
Monash End-to-the-Darkness of the Stargazers
You encountered a number of bunyip spirits in your time looking for the remains of a single bunyip. Did you gain any sense of what they may have felt regarding your quest?
Bob
I spoke with a Bunyip spirit who was guarding a caern in Sth Australia and as I've said, she told me she didn't mind as long as we left her in peace to mourn her dead. However, overall there's so much blame and hatred towards us that I don't know that they believe we'd ever do anything to help them.
Monash replies:
You feel that demonstrating good faith (he looks hard at Vlad) is important to first gain their trust?
Bob
Definitely, why should they trust us? We killed them all. Demonstrating good faith is a possible step towards trust, however as I've said I don't know whether they will be able to trust us.

Corey

Corey keeps his head down and doesn't volunteer info unless directly questioned...

Wungala Rose (Blackfuries)
Why do you think Cernonous did not tell the council about his research?
Corey
"Mate, bit of a controversial issue isn't it, bringing back the Bunyip? Lots of guilty feelings all round, Garou angsting left, right and centre, and here this guy wants to use this Weaver (or possibly Wyrm) tech to do the deed. Whadya think he was going to do?"
Wungala Rose
Did he say why he had chosen your pack to make the steps towards returning the bunyip?
Corey
"I recall he may have spun some shit about us having special links to the Bunyip, seeing as we ran into them in the past. I guess we were the pack for the job, as far as he saw it."
Don Mephisto of the Glasswalkers
Given the evidence at the site, do you feel that the Dancers spoiled Cernonous' ritual?
Corey
"You mean at the uni lab? It could have been any garou, but the Dancers are the prime suspects."
Don Mephisto
[looks a bit surprised] Could you perhaps explain that?
Corey
"I mean, they tend to dig their noses into everything, thats all. Being of the wyrm and all".
Don Mephisto
We had assumed that it /was/ the Dancers, but you suggest that it might have been others?
Corey
"Not especially likely to have been anybody else, I'm just stating the possibility."
Carla Grimmson of the Get of Fenris
Do you have a personal opinion on whether the Bunyip are, lets say, coherent enough to be able to understand your efforts to return them?
Corey
"Pretty raving, though I can kinda understand how they got that way. Besides, it was never clear to me that they actually wanted to come back in the first place."
Carla
So you feel efforts to return them to the Realm are wasted? [this causes a brief bit of shouting. Mostly Darius-led.]
Corey
"Not necessarily. We just have to be careful, and not rush into anything. I mean its a good idea, but we should think about what state they will be when DO return..."
Vlad of the Shadowlords
Why did you not kill the bunyip spirit when it became clear that the corruption was due to its presence?
Corey
"I had a go at a bunyip spirit at one stage, it was way tough."
Vlad
Do you feel that Cernonous' methods were ill-advised?
Corey
"Yeah, I thought that methods were pretty wyrmy. That sort of Genetic manipulation is not exactly natural, is it? Prob is, if he'd gone public about his plan, nothing might ever had got decided, one way or the other. I've got to admire him the faith of his convictions."
Vlad
Of the Wyrm you say? Earlier you said 'weaver' - interesting that a Glasswalker would have such a low opinion of that member of the triat. [this isn't exactly aimed at you - he looks at Don Mephisto at the end who disparages his barb, but it gets a response from other members of the council. Amidst the yelling, Vlad says that even the younger Glasswalkers can see that their leadership has turned to the weaver and away from Gaia. Eventually things quieten down]
Darius of the Silverfangs
Where do you suspect that the talen-sticks come from?
Corey
"I thought they were planted by the Spirals, and were booby trapped. It could have been anybody with an interest in the affair, who wanted to lend a hand, but not get involved. But, curiosity got the better of us, I guess. "
Monash End-to-the-Darkness of the Stargazers
You encountered a number of bunyip spirits in your time looking for the remains of a single bunyip. Did you gain any sense of what they may have felt regarding your quest?
Corey
"As I said, they were generally pretty narky and pissed off, as a rule. I don't recall them making any specific comments about our quest. However, I tend to leave the talking-to-spirits stuff to others in the pack".

Freya

Wungala Rose (Blackfuries)
Why do you think Cernonous did not tell the council about his research?
Freya
I think he wanted to be sure it was possible before causing an uproar in the council. There are those who would have supported the effort, but there are many who would prefer to let sleeping dogs lie, so to speak.
Wungala Rose
Did he say why he had chosen your pack to make the steps towards returning the bunyip?
Freya
As you know we've had quite a few dealings with Bunyip spirits and lived to tell the tale so we were an obvious choice to help him contact the Bunyip
Wungala Rose
It seems a trifle odd that he drove almost straight to Fiddle Dee - was there any indication that he knew the event was likely to happen and contacted you at that time deliberately?
Freya
Perhaps he had a specific area in mind because it'd had these type of storms before or perhaps they came to us because we were looking for them, I'm not sure, spirits work in mysterious ways.
Don Mephisto of the Glasswalkers
Given the evidence at the site, do you feel that the Dancers spoiled Cernonous' ritual?
Freya
Ritual? As far as I know Cernonous was checking the Bunyip bone for viable DNA when he was murdered not performing a ritual.
Don Mephisto
[short pause] Bunyip spirits, as a rule, do not appear in cities. You have spoken about Cernonous wanting to summon spirits to be reborn. The appearance of the spirit would therefore indicated a ritual perhaps? Do you have another explanation?
Freya
As I said as far as I know Cernonous was only doing the scientific side of research here, further rituals he may have planned to do elsewhere, it was the Dancers who summoned the Bunyip spirit (out of the bone we think) to do their bidding. We saw in the mirror's memory a dark crinos shape killing Cernonous. We are fairly sure Cernonous was working on his computer not a ritual.
Carla Grimmson of the Get of Fenris
Do you have a personal opinion on whether the Bunyip are, lets say, coherent enough to be able to understand your efforts to return them?
Freya
I think under the right circumstances that it is entirely possible, yes.
Vlad
Do you feel that Cernonous' methods were ill-advised?
Freya
Which methods are you talking about?
Vlad
[short pause] which do you feel were ill-advised?
Freya
The only thing that was ill-advised was his lack of protection, he regrettably underestimated the amount of security he'd need.
Vlad of the Shadowlords
Why did you not kill the bunyip spirit when it became clear that the corruption was due to its presence?
Freya
When we tried to pin it the first time it appeared. It disappeared, then Abby attempted to bind it to stop it, but it became evident that another power was controlling it - probably against it's will, as it was in a frenzy of pain and anger and getting more and more injured each time it appeared.
Vlad
You don't seem to understand my question. The Bonegnawer caern was being drained by the efforts to withhold corruption from the Bunyip spirit - what is more important, to cease the corruption of one spirit or to save a caern? If you had removed the spirit, the totem would not have been draining the caern.
Freya
One, sir, we didn't know that the caern spirit would react like that. We had made every effort to understand what was happening and the caern being drained was very unexpected. Two, as soon as we knew what was happening to the caern, we along with many other garou worked tirelessly to find the source of corruption and destroy it.
Darius of the Silverfangs
Where do you suspect that the talen-sticks come from?
Freya
That was something I hoped the council could help answer. [bit of a stir, but no followup]
We don't know where they came from, it was originally thought that it was from our sept leader but he says that the only thing he sent to Sydney was Hand of Lore, and given that Abby talked to him on an non-existent phone we think that someone was using mind speak.
Monash End-to-the-Darkness of the Stargazers
You encountered a number of bunyip spirits in your time looking for the remains of a single bunyip. Did you gain any sense of what they may have felt regarding your quest?
Freya
They seemed depressed (understandably) they were willing to help to a point but they didn't really believe that we'd really bring them back given our past history.

Krieg

Wungala Rose (Blackfuries)
Why do you think Cernonous did not tell the council about his research?
Krieg
Because he thought that there might be some segments of garou society that would oppose the resurrection of the bunyip, but that such a thing would be good for Gaia.
Wungala Rose
Did he say why he had chosen your pack to make the steps towards returning the bunyip?
Krieg
Because he knew that we had had contact with the bunyip that didn't involve murder or insanity, so he thought we might have an affinity with them.
Don Mephisto of the Glasswalkers
Given the evidence at the site, do you feel that the Dancers spoiled Cernonous' ritual?
Krieg
Possibly, I don't have a great knowledge of rituals, but I was under the impression that he was still in the stages of finding out whether the bone was viable, so no damage was done to the greater ritual of the resurrection of the bunyip.
Carla Grimmson of the Get of Fenris
Do you have a personal opinion on whether the Bunyip are, lets say, coherent enough to be able to understand your efforts to return them?
Krieg
I don't know
Vlad of the Shadowlords
Why did you not kill the bunyip spirit when it became clear that the corruption was due to its presence?
Krieg
It was not clear that the corruption was due to it's presence, it was clear that when it arrived, the corruption followed it. It is my theory that the corruption caused the bunyip's presence, not the other way around. Otherwise it would be like destroying the symptom and not the cause.
Vlad
Do you feel that Cernonous' methods were illadvised?
Krieg
No. He had thought rationally and for a great deal of time about the methods and ramifications of this act.
Darius of the Silverfangs
Where do you suspect that the talen-sticks come from?
Krieg
I don't know to be honest, but a theory I have is that it was the bunyip themselves that intervened, giving us a chance to rescue their friend, and the opportunity to help them in the future. The talens almost felt like they were attuned to the bunyip.
Monash End-to-the-Darkness of the Stargazers
You encountered a number of bunyip spirits in your time looking for the remains of a single bunyip. Did you gain any sense of what they may have felt regarding your quest?
Krieg
It was hard to ascertain, but I think that they were a bit confused and angry. I believe that they are willing to return but may be a bit wary of the rest of the garou's motives. After all to them, we killed them because they wouldn't give us their secrets, and I think that being dead hasn't changed their minds on that point of contention.

Mother Pasta is definitely unimpressed with the pack - she seems to hold Darius responsible for most of what happened, she definitely regards Claws of Wisdom as being irresponsible.

Tjinderi of the Uktena is using the whole incident to point out that only the Uktena have the appropriate knowledge and understanding to interact with spirits such as the Bunyip - and the Killer of Children, which she raises at the meeting. Some of the other Council members also seem to be using the event as points-coring for their own agendas.

Very late in the evening, all the Garou involved in the Council are brought before the horseshoe table. Innana steps forward and speaks. She says that the Council is far from agreed on the matter, but have decided the following.

Cernonous died doing what he chose to do. It was his choice and his responsibility, and he paid the price. He must also bear responsibility for some of the events that occured after his death.

Over the course of the whole affair, the Claws of Wisdom freely gave assistance to more senior Garou, as well as to the Bone Gnawers, Get of Fenris and the Red Talons, and they behaved honourably towards the spirits of the land. They were motivated by the best of intentions, and acting in a matter about which there is almost total ignorance, despite one hundred years of searching by the Garou.

However, they were responsible for endangering at least one Caern, and perhaps also responsible for the Garou who died in a precipitous assault on a hive.

Innana points out that when one is pushing the frontiers of something, one must accept the responsibility for all the consequences of that endeavour. The Council does not believe that the Claws of Wisdom have demonstrated the experience to fully understand or predict the possible consequences of their activities with the Bunyip. At this stage, the Council is not prepared to punish them - however, they have decided that as far as the Claws of Wisdom are concerned, all future matters concerning the Bunyip are to be examined only with the Council's knowledge and consent.

Christine Elliot steps forward and asks to be recognised. Innana frowns and asks her to be brief. Christine asks what they intend to take about the "traitor". There is a stir amongst the Garou and Darius demands she explains. Christine says that just before she finished off one of the Dancers that Marion had nearly killed, it gloated at her, asking how the Garou expected to beat them when they are betrayed by their own kind. Innana says that they don't know to what the Dancer was referring. It may have been a reference to Cernonous' work, or it may have been a reference to the attack on the hive.

Innana continues - as a final matter, the Council has decided to examine the bone fragment at the centre of the whole mess for themselves. Abby hands the bone over to Innana, who gives it to Tjinderi Knowing-Smile.

The Claws of Wisdom are free to go, so they join the Garou leaving by Moonbridge to Sleeping Lore.

Monday 12 - Wednesday 14

Bob lets the rest of the pack know that he had a weird dream last night. He dreamt of the same red wolf spirit that had visited him after the saving of the Cave Caern. This time the wolf said that in Sydney someone or someones made a serious mistake. When they realised, they attempted to rectify the situation as best they could. The one who was primarily responsible fled, and may seek revenge against the Claws of Wisdom for his downfall. The spirit also said that they would be watched even more closely than before. Bob asks some questions about who the spirit is, and who it is talking about, but it refuses to answer them.

Corey spends a lot of his time closetted with Ian Shatterglass. Its not hard to guess that he is intending to challenge Abby for packleadership.

Thursday 15

Corey is gone. He does not appear on the mental link that the pack have, and asking Ian reveals that he has decided to leave the Sept and join the free pack We Also Walk Dogs. He wanted to avoid a long confrontation and goodbyes. Questioning Merlin also reveals that Corey came and spoke with him the night before - fundamentally Corey's aims did not agree with what Merlin has chosen the pack to achieve, and so he agreed to allow Corey to leave. Questing Stone indicates that Corey is in Sydney.

In the afternoon, Claws of Wisdom are at the Sept helping with the Moot preparations when a Moonbridge opens. Ends-the-Quiet brings the visitor over to talk to the pack, and it turns out to be Alex Sees-for-Miles, a member of the Ngalyod pack, which serve the Jindabyne Council. Abby asks why he's here, and Alex makes it clear that he's not here, and he hasn't been asked to tell them what he's not saying. He says that he is aware that the pack are not exactly thrilled with the Council at the moment, but that they should be aware that they were split nearly evenly between those who thought heads should roll and those who believed that the pack should be given a little slack and leeway, having had the first (semi)sucessful contact with the Bunyip. Alex will not say who supported which stance, but he does say that some members of the Council advocated for the pack did so at some political cost, and that they crossed long term tribal enemities to do so. He points out that although the more lenient side scraped through, the issue was not closed, and the Council may take action against them in the future.

Abby asks if he's just here to warn them, and Alex says no. He suggests that they show every appearance of not disregarding the Council's directive - don't try and get around the wording, don't bad mouth the decsion, and so on. While he understands that they may have issues with the individuals on the Council, he asks them to consider the institution and the good it does. There is also the possibilty that if they are seen to not put any store in what the council says that their opponents on the Council will feel justified in taking direct action against the pack. Abby looks a bit pissed, but agrees that what he's saying makes sense - both for them, and for the Garou nation as a whole. Alex thanks the pack and heads off

Moot! The Moot is primarily focused on the events in Sydney - Claws of Wisdom are asked to tell the whole story from beginning to end. Discussions are had over some of the loose threads and confusions. Freya politely challenges Abby for pack leadership and Abby decides to step aside without a challenge. The Moot continues as per normal, and the pack have their loverly dream of flying over Malfeas.
